Even if your workouts are on point… this matters more.

Hey Reader,

There was this company I worked for in my 20s that sold healthy prepped meals in grocery stores. I was one of their brand ambassadors—offering samples and talking to people about how convenient healthy eating could be.

I’ll never forget this one guy.

Fit. Muscular. Cart full of junk food.

He smirks and says, “I work out so I can eat like this.”

Now, we won’t unpack all the layers of that mindset today (or where it might have lead him when he got older), but I do want to touch on one important piece.

I wake up most mornings and do my morning flow—pushups, planks, bird-dogs. Then I go for a 30-minute walk to tap into that post-movement EPOC boost (which I love). I usually do all of this fasted because I eat breakfast a little later. My body’s used to it. (Fasted training isn’t safe or right for everyone.)

When I sleep well, my morning habits are spot-on.

But here’s the thing…

Even when I do everything right, I still get off track sometimes.

Alot of times.

My son might whip up fresh blueberry pancakes because he’s excited about a new recipe. My daughter might come home from my mom’s with homemade chocolate chip cookies and warm zucchini bread. [Not really "might" because they're true stories from the same day! lol]

So even though I already had breakfast…

Suddenly I’m making a plate.

Suddenly I’m snacking all day.

Suddenly I’m feeling off, sluggish, and wondering why.

And yes, maybe they used great ingredients. But too much food is still too much food.

AND sugar—whether it’s maple syrup, coconut sugar, or cane—is still sugar.

[Although I will mention, I cook with coconut sugar over any other sugar because along with the sugar you are getting quite a few minerals plus antioxidants and fiber. Not that you need sugar to get those but it's better than straight table sugar or the chemical shit storm in artifical sweeteners.]

Anyway...

👉 Unless you’re training like an Olympic athlete, you can’t out-train a poor diet.

I say “poor diet” lightly, because I believe all food can fit. I’m not anti-pancake or anti-cookie. I’m not saying those foods are so called “bad.”

But what I am saying is this: Moderation matters.

These foods can be part of a healthy lifestyle—but they should never replace your nutrient-dense meals.

Protein first. Veggies often. Hydrate. Move your body.

Then, if you really want the cookie—have it. With joy. With awareness. Without shame.

But, don’t trick yourself into thinking workouts cancel out everything else.

They don’t!

What you eat most of the time is what shapes your energy, your results, and your long-term health.

Hey Reader, So here I am after a day of eating really well, sitting on the couch winding down with a cup of tea. I'm about to make it through a successful day of eating and working out. Ricky and Emily are making chocolate chip cookies. (My son and his girlfriend.) I am unphased. 💪 Then they come out of the oven. You know that smell, I know you do and if you don't well... Do you also not like ice cream? Because you may not be human. I thought about just one cookie. But then I took a second,...

Hey Reader, I hate the word busy, almost as much as I hate the word try. And we're programmed to use it all the time. Someone invites us to do something and we say we're busy instead of saying no, or I don't want to. We tell ourselves we're busy to avoid many things we need to do. Instead of giving ourselves permission to say no or to recognize what is a priority for ourselves right now and what isn't. Busy is worn like a badge of honor. I know this because it was one of my most used words....

Hey Reader, Have you ever looked at a picture of your younger self and thought, “wow look how great I looked, why was I ever so down on myself.” Maybe you haven’t felt that way. I definitely have. I spent so much time in my life wanting to be fitter, skinnier, more muscle here, less muscle there, whatever. The funny thing is the people around me saw the beautiful girl I didn’t see, because I spent so much time looking at everyone else. I would be lying to you if I said that I don’t still do...
