[Saturday Spark✨] What Dieting Does to Your Metabolism...

Hey Reader,

Eat the dang pizza, just don't eat it every day!

I’ve had many women over the years talk to me about the slow rise in their scale year after year. Many of them even mention how they read that as early as 30 your metabolism just slows every decade.

It’s it’s not that simple or necessarily true.

And what if year after year the scale went down instead of up? 🤔

Let’s talk about something that pretty much every woman over 40 has experienced at some point:

A diet that “worked”—until it didn’t.

You lose weight fast… only to gain it all back. Or worse—more.

It’s a frustrating cycle. And it’s not your fault. It’s the system. Restrictive dieting causes your metabolism to drop. So every time you go through that lose-gain cycle, your body adapts… but not in a good way. Over time, it gets harder and harder to lose weight, and easier to gain it back.

I found this simple image on google that perfectly illustrates what happens over time with yo-yo dieting versus a sustainable, reverse-dieting approach. I'll make my own chart at some point because I do find myself talking about metabolism, yo-yo dieting and reverse dieting so often with my clients and I want a clear chart that really shows the big picture. For now this gives a great snap shot.

What the image doesn’t show—but what I’ve seen again and again—is that the yo-yo dieter often ends up heavier than where they started, while someone focused on sustainable habits may see slower progress at first—but they keep the results. That’s the power of long-term change.

If you have spent years dieting then your metabolic rate isn’t going down simply because you are aging, it’s going down because of the years of abusing your body. And there are a ton of other factors you may or may not notice as lifestyle changes and of course hormones do play a role. But, most of what is happening with your metabolism is something you can control.

This is why I am a big promoter of reverse dieting and sustainable change. You might not see dramatic drops overnight.

But over time?

Your body is changing and you don’t just lose weight. You keep it off. Your metabolism stays healthy. And your life feels normal—not like a permanent food prison. Ugh a life where I can’t enjoy my favorite foods…

No Thank you!

Because that’s what sustainability really looks like:

✅ You lose a little weight.

✅ You live your life—maybe gain a pound or two.

✅ But it’s less than what you lost.

✅ You refocus, lose a little more. [The refocus is a VERY important step]

✅ Repeat, repeat, repeat… until one day you realize: this worked.

That’s what I teach my clients to do. It’s not a race to the bottom. It’s a steady, supportive system that works with your body—not against it.

You deserve better than another diet.

Hello Reader, Ever feel like you’re putting in the effort, but not seeing the results you expected? You’re not alone. Fitness frustration is so common—but it doesn’t mean you’re failing. Here’s why you might be feeling stuck (and what to do about it): ❌ Expecting Instant Results: It takes 4-8 weeks to see visible changes, but your body is improving internally right away—more energy, better sleep, and stronger muscles. ❌ Inconsistent Workouts & Nutrition: Fitness is a long game. Hey Reader! We all know consistency is key when it comes to fitness—but actually sticking with it? That’s where most people struggle. ➡️Here’s how to make exercise a lasting habit (without feeling like a chore): ✔ Find Your “Why” – Do you want more energy? Less stress? To keep up with your kids? A strong reason "WHY" makes motivation easier. ✔ Choose Workouts You Enjoy – Hate running? Don’t run! Love strength training? Do that. Exercise should feel good, not like punishment. ✔ Make a Schedule...

Hey Reader, Here's something I get asked that you may find helpful with your own health and fitness goals. "What time do you workout and how many days a week?" First off workout timing and and frequency are very personal to your own lifestyle, schedule and experience. Currently, I am training 3-4 days per week, very short less than 20minute HiRt workouts. And I've been training in the morning, somewhere between 4am and 7am. So not always the same time. My workouts aren't my only movement but...
